Coup: Ousted Gabon President, Ali Bongo Pleads For Help In Fresh Video Clip

The deposed President of Gabon, Ali Bongo, has reportedly appeared in a newly surfaced video clip on social media, seeking support from his associates. In the video, Bongo is seen urging his “friends” to raise awareness globally about the coup that led to his house arrest at the hands of the coup leaders. Earlier, punch reported that Ali Bongo, the President of Gabon, had been subjected to house arrest by military leaders who orchestrated a coup in the country. Simultaneously, one of his sons was arrested on charges of treason.

These events unfolded shortly after military officers in Gabon seized control of power from President Bongo, who had recently won re-election. The coup leaders justified their actions by citing severe institutional, political, economic, and social crises they deemed necessary for the advancement of the West African nation.

Upon taking control, the coup leaders dissolved various institutions, including the government, the Senate, the National Assembly, and the Constitutional Court.

Al-Jazeera reported that the leaders of the coup disclosed that President Bongo was currently under house arrest, and one of his sons had been apprehended for “treason.” A statement read on state TV by the coup leaders confirmed that Bongo was confined to his residence, accompanied by his family and medical professionals.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent, Nicolas Haque, reporting from Dakar, Senegal, highlighted a significant security presence in the streets of Libreville. He noted that the presidential guards appeared to have taken charge of the presidential palace, while key positions around the National Assembly and Senate were also under their control. In a video clip posted on social media, a visibly concerned Bongo confirmed his and his family’s arrest. He communicated, “I’m reaching out to our friends across the world to ask them to raise their voices for… the people here who arrested me and my family.” However, the exact time and location of the video’s recording could not be ascertained through this platform.
