Chelsea: £325k-a-week Star Not Enjoying Playing At Stamford Bridge

Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling is not enjoying playing wing-back under Graham Potter, believes journalist Dean Jones.

The England international is currently being used in that position by his manager and has really struggled there.

What is the latest news involving Sterling?

Sterling was recently criticised by former Chelsea player Pat Nevin after a difficult afternoon in the Blues’ 4-1 defeat against Brighton last weekend.

“I’m watching Raheem Sterling right now and I’ve said that Graham Potter has got the best from every player since he has been there – with one exception,” Nevin was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

“If he keeps playing the way he is right now, he’s not even a consideration for the World Cup.”

Since Potter’s arrival at the start of September, Sterling has scored just two goals.

What has Jones said about Sterling?

Jones thinks this Sterling at wing-back experiment has to end.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the 27-year-old’s form, the journalist said: “You’ve got to consider that Raheem Sterling hasn’t played his best position for Chelsea. He’s been all over the place.

I think he’s played six different positions this season and only really under Tuchel did we see him playing his best role on the left wing, which is where he was best for Man City, where he probably would be best for Chelsea.

“So Sterling needs to be played regularly in a position that suits him. I can’t imagine for one second he’s enjoying playing at wing-back.”

Does Sterling deserve the criticism he is getting?

His performances of late have not been great, but the criticism he has been receiving does seem unfair on the basis that he is playing in a position that is completely alien to him.

Over the last few years, Sterling has proven to be one of the best attackers in the Premier League. During his time at Manchester City, the England player scored 131 goals in 339 appearances. To now ask him to play in a defensive role is borderline ridiculous.

Where did Chelsea legend Didier Drogba start his career?

To put things simply, some of Sterling’s poor displays have to fall on Potter, who now has to push the £325,000-a-week Chelsea star forward or leave him out of his starting XI.

If Chelsea continue to play the likes of Sterling and Christian Pulisic at wing-back, as they did against Brighton, then they are going to be in for more defeats like that humiliating one at the Amex.
