Ahead of Imo State governorship election, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has charged relevant stakeholders to promote peace and support the agency’s mission to mobilize the electorate and ensure free and fair elections during the off-season polls.

The Director-General of NOA, Garba Abari, made the call on Wednesday, while flagging off the agency’s off-season governorship polls sensitization campaign on the new Electoral Act, civic participation, and peaceful election in Owerri, Imo State capital.

Abari was concerned about the comparatively low voter participation despite what seemed to be Nigerians’ enthusiasm for the 2023 general election.

The NOA boss further said the level of violence, manipulations, and desperation exhibited during elections have generally given democracy a bad name, and all of us as Nigerians have a duty to put a stop to that.

The military chiefs of the Economic Community of West African States will meet on Thursday and Fiday in Accra, Ghana amid tensions over a possible military intervention in Niger, according to Ghana’s army spokesman.

ECOWAS member states had initially mulled a military intervention against those who carried out Niger’s coup, and the bloc’s heads of state had ordered a military force to be readied to restore constitutional order during a special summit, but they said a peaceful resolution of the conflict should continue to be pursued.

ECOWAS defence ministers and military chiefs already met a week after the coup in Niger and drafted deployment plans after they had issued an ultimatum against them.

Of the 15 ECOWAS members, Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Benin and Guinea-Bissau declared their willingness to provide troops in the case of an intervention.
