President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has pardoned 2,298 prisoners as part of the 2023 Independence day celebrations.
This has been confirmed in a statement signed by Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Homeland Security Oliver Kumbambe dated July 5, 2023 made available to this publication.
According to the statement, the pardon of the said prisoners is an act of mercy by President Chakwera during the 59th Independence Day Celebrations.
The celebrations started yesterday with prayers which were held at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe.
The celebrations will reach its climax today at Bingu International Stadium where there will be a football match between Yanga Football Club of Tanzania and Nyasa Big Bullets.
Meanwhile, Tanzania President Samia Suluhu is currently in the country for the Independence Day Celebrations.
