Igbos In Niger Republic Protest Against Proposed Military Action By Tinubu

Nigerians of Southeast extraction who live in the Niger Republic have protested against the proposed military action against coup leaders in Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

The ECOWAS had given the Niger coup plotters led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, seven days to return power to President Mohammed Bazoom or face military action.

ECOWAS has also imposed sanctions on Niger, including halting all financial transactions and freezing its national assets while the Nigerian government has cut off electricity supply to the country

Tinubu Meets With Okonjo-Iweala At Aso Villa

The purpose of her visit was not yet known as of press time but it might not be unconnected to the economic and trade agenda of the new administration in Nigeria.

In June 2023, Tinubu and Okonjo-Iweala met in France at the Global Pact Summit in Paris hosted by President Emmanuel Macron.

Okonjo-Iweala served twice as Nigeria’s Finance Minister between 2003 and 2006 as well as from 2011 to 2015, the first woman to hold the position.

Two suspected kidnappers killed as police rescue herdsman in Osun

Two suspected kidnappers have been shot dead in Iwo, Osun State, during a police and hunters operation to rescue a Fulani herder, identified as Alhaji Adamu, who was abducted in Abase Village.

The PUNCH gathered that Adamu was abducted in the early hours of Tuesday, by an 11-man gang said to be Bororo that attacked his village and took him to an undisclosed location in the bush.

But a security team of police operatives and hunters swiftly responded to the situation and stormed the bush in the area which resulted in an exchange of gunshots.

During the shootout, two of the abductors were reportedly shot dead, while others fled into the bush with gunshot injuries.

A security source, who participated in the search and rescue operation, but was not authorised to comment, during an interview with PUNCH Metro confirmed the incident saying, “In the early hours of today, Tuesday, an incident of kidnapping occurred at Agbese Village near Idi Araba, Oke Oba, Iwo West LCDA.

A gang of about 11 men who are Fulanis/Bororos went to Agbase Village and abducted one Alhaji Adamu, a Fulani from his farm. Even though the kidnappers succeeded in whisking away the man from his farm, the villagers raised alarm, and the police were swiftly informed, which led to the deployment of a rescue team in conjunction with the local hunters, who quickly combed the bushes and sighted the abductors and their captive.

“There was an exchange of gunshots during which two of the abductors were neutralised while others escaped with gunshot injuries. The victim was however rescued and taken to a hospital in Iwo town. The remains of the killed abductors had been taken to the police station in Iwo.

Why police stopped issuance of gun licence- IGP.

The Force Headquarters on Tuesday announced that the police stopped the issuance of licenses for small arms due to the high rate of illegal arms proliferation in the country.

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun made the disclosure while responding to a question by our correspondent during his (IG’s) meeting with members of the Police Management Team including Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistant Inspectors General of Police, and Commissioners of Police at the Goodluck Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

He said, “We are mopping up arms in circulation. There are too many arms in circulation and if we continue to issue licenses on arms, we may continue to aggravate the problems we are trying to solve,” Egbetokun said.

However, he further noted that the police might review the ban in the future.For now, there is a temporary ban on the issuance of firearms. We May review it later, but we are not issuing firearms licenses nationwide now.”

The PUNCH reports that the Firearm Act has been responsible for the control of firearms in Nigeria for the past years.

The Act provides that no person shall have in his possession or under his control, any firearm or ammunition except such person has a license from the President or the Inspector General of Police.
