‘I’ll Beat Him’: Sowunmi Confident Of Saraki Defeat In Likely PDP Chairmanship Battle

Segun Sowunmi, a PDP stalwart, is certain of defeating former Senate President Bukola Saraki for the position of Peoples Democratic Party National Chairman, adding, “I’ll beat him.”

On Wednesday, Sowunmi made the claim during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today. When asked how he would perform against Saraki, who has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the top PDP seat, the former Ogun State governor answered,

Listen to what he said. “I’ll beat him.” I’ll ask him what he did in 2014/2015, when the party was destabilized. I’m confident I’ll beat him.”

Sowunmi claimed that Saraki’s emergence would result in another party chairman from the North Central geographical zone.

The PDP has had 15 chairmen; six of them have come from the North Central area. After Ayu’s departure in March, acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum took over. Damagum spoke during the party’s retreat for elected officials in Bauchi State on June 3, 2023.

The chairmanship of the North Central party is not in their right, and the chairmanship of the South-West party should be in the South-West. Sowunmi stressed the significance of stability and warned against deposing the party head.

He contrasted the party’s current condition to that of previous leaders and highlighted the importance of making sound decisions.

He also questioned the party’s presidential candidate for 2023, Atiku Abubakar, and defended his name as not being a destabilizer. His name is being referenced as young people gyrate.
