Bayelsa Government Condemns Alleged Human Rights Abuses in Opu-Nembe

According to Punch report, The Bayelsa State Government has strongly criticized reported incidents of human rights violations in Nembe-Basambiri, Nembe Local Government Area. This condemnation comes in the wake of the deployment of a specialized police team from Abuja to the region.

During an unscheduled visit to Basambiri, Governor Douye Diri, represented by his deputy Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, expressed concern over the alleged mistreatment of citizens during the crackdown. He questioned the approach used by the police team, emphasizing that it is crucial to target actual criminals rather than innocent and law-abiding residents.

Governor Diri called upon the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to withdraw the police personnel from Nembe Basambiri in order to reduce tension in the area. He further directed the immediate transfer of a victim, Mrs. Ifiemi Eminah, who was wounded in recent shootings, from Ogbolomabiri General Hospital to Yenagoa for better medical care.

The governor appealed for professionalism and respect for human rights from both the police and military personnel stationed in Nembe. He acknowledged instances of alleged human rights abuses and requested a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

Addressing the issue, Governor Diri stated, “We will ensure that their rights are protected. Our youths should not respond in any form because the government is on top of the situation. And we believe justice will be done.”

The governor’s visit was accompanied by service commanders, the Commissioner of Police, members of the Bayelsa State Executive Council, and other government officials.

In light of recent events, Governor Diri’s call for justice and accountability underscores the commitment of the Bayelsa State Government to safeguarding the rights and well-being of its citizens.
