ASUU Reveals Main Reason They Called Off Strike

On Monday, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), announced that his members had ended the strike that had been going on for the past eight months. The reason for the end of the strike was trust between the leadership of the House of Representatives and the union.

Osodeke also stated that the acceptance of the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System (IPPIS) as the payment platform rather than their demand for the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) was done on a temporary basis, basically as an interim measure, pending when a formal agreement would be reached with the Federal Government. The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) made his remarks during a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila. The purpose of the meeting was to follow up on the agreements that were reached during the previous meetings held before the strike was suspended.

It should be recalled that the tripartite meetings had decided to extract some of the quirks of the universities in the UTAS and merge them with the IPPIS. It was on the basis of this decision that the most recent meeting was called by the speaker.
