APC Nat'l Chairman: We have 2 experienced persons who were contenders for the position in 2022 – Source

A recent report by Leadership paper hinted on the resignation of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who was facing numerous challenges. Following his departure, the presidency and senior leaders of the APC have initiated consultations with influential party members to find his replacement.

According to a confidential source within the presidency, it was revealed that associates of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were engaged in discussions with key stakeholders of the party regarding the selection of the next APC chairman. During the meeting, two potential candidates emerged as strong contenders for the position.

One group of party leaders suggested that the next National Chairman should be a Christian from the Northern region, aiming to balance the previous Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket that featured President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. Conversely, some believed that the candidate should be chosen from those who had stepped down for Senator Abdullahi Adamu at the party’s previous national convention.

Considering that the religious controversy was no longer a significant concern within the party and the nation, the decision-makers leaned towards the latter option. Consequently, the names of two prominent figures, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Nasarawa State, and Senator Sani Musa from Niger State, surfaced as potential replacements for Abdullahi Adamu.

Tanko Al-Makura had been a strong contender for the APC’s national chairmanship position in the 2022 race but withdrew when former President Muhammadu Buhari persuaded party governors to support Abdullahi Adamu as the preferred candidate.

The reasoning behind favoring Tanko Al-Makura and Sani Musa lay in their experience and past involvement in the competition for the same position. As both were significant contenders in the previous race, they were seen as suitable candidates for the current vacancy.

The source reveals that, “we have two experienced persons who were major contenders for the position in 2022, Tanko Al-Makura and Sani Musa.”

While zoning, or the regional origin of the candidate, was not the primary concern for the change in party leadership, the prevailing idea was to maintain the status quo in terms of the zone that should produce the next National Chairman.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation has prompted the APC leadership and the presidency to engage in consultations to find a suitable successor. Two main candidates, Tanko Al-Makura and Sani Musa, have emerged from the discussions, and their past experiences in vying for the position have made them strong contenders for the role of the next APC National Chairman.
