Following the news that some presidential candidates submitted names of their running mates as placeholders to meet up with the INEC deadline, the APC National Chairman has clarified Tinubu and his running mate.
According to the APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, it might be that the name Tinubu submitted as his running mate might stand permanently for the position.
Why Tinubu search for running mate is complicated- video
However, some APC stakeholders have sent a letter to Tinubu and the party stating clearly the person they want as Tinubu’ s running mate and why they want such a person.
Meanwhile, the INEC has explained what APC and LP can do as regards the already submitted vice presidential candidate’ s names in case of substitution.
Tinubu Did Not Pick His Running Mate Out Of The Confines Of The Law- APC National Chairman, Adamu Said; SEE What Happened
According to the Daily Post, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu stated that a vice presidential candidate was selected following ” careful” legal discussions.
On Monday, Adamu told reporters at State House after accompanying Biodun Oyebanji, the incoming governor of Ekiti, to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to Kabiru Faskari, a top APC official, Bola Tinubu’ s running mate Kabir Masari has been chosen by the party’ s presidential candidate.
Rumors have circulated about the potential that Masari, if really Tinubu’ s running mate, may not wish to step aside despite the fact that the ruling party hasn’ t formally announced this.
Adamu gave the following statement while discussing the development. ” We are not in the speculative world. We are governed by the laws of the land. There’ s nothing our presidential candidate has done with regards to returning his forms that is not within the confines of the law of the land.
” Everything we’ ve done so far, we have done very carefully with legal consultation and we are cocksure, we’ re not going to have the kind of speculation that you are professing at this point in time.
” We’ re very comfortable with what we have done. It is still pessimism. However, not in that school of thought yet. We don’ t have to be there.
As reported by Channels, the All Progressives
Congress Stakeholders Forum has urged the party and President Muhammadu Buhari to select Babagana Zulum as their vice- presidential candidate.
A majority of the forum’ s 840 members feel that if the proposal for Zulum is approved it will help their party win the general elections in 2023 and also help save their country from financial ruin.
On Sunday in Katsina, National Chairman of the Forum Abdullahi Aliyu Katsina said that only Governor Zulum, who has earned the hearts of Nigerians via his excellent leadership over the previous three years, can make people vote for the party next year.
The group believes that the sacrifice Governor Zulum made in Borno State justifies the potential for him to recreate it in Nigeria.
The group’ s statement read; ” Our request is open and is no more than taking Governor Zulum of Borno State as the vice- presidential candidate of APC. We understand that only Governor Zulum can galvanize the votes from the entire nineteen northern states.
” To avoid losing the election, the only person in Nigeria today who can bring the desired success for the party is Governor Zulum. Anybody today that is picked as vice- presidential candidate for the APC, if not Zulum, may not give us the desired success. Failure for the party to pick Zulum, it may end up losing the election. “
As reported by the Daily Post, the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, has declared its opinion on presidential candidate substitutions.
The DAILY POST has learned that the vast majority of presidential contenders have submitted what is known as space keepers to the electoral body for review.
Since they were submitted to beat the time stipulated by the Electoral Act, the name implies that such vice- presidential candidates would be substituted later on.
Ahead of schedule, PDP presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar nominated Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa; however, opposition parties Labour Party and All Progressive Congress have yet to choose their running partners for their respective presidential campaigns.
To INEC, APC candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu picked Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari to be his running mate. In the same vein, LP candidate Peter Obi picked his campaign director- general Doyin Okupe as his own running mate.
INEC’ s National Commissioner of Information and Voter Education Festus Okoye said on Arise TV on Monday that the running mates can only be substituted if they write to the Commission and attach a signed affidavit.
” The law says that as a presidential candidate, you must nominate an associate to run with you and as far as the Independent National Electoral Commission is concerned, the presidential candidates have submitted their associates to run with them in the presidential election.
” As far as we are concerned, there’ s no form submitted by the presidential candidate where they said ‘ we’ re submitting this person’ s name as a place or space holder’ . The issue of space or place holder is a unique Nigerian invention that has no place in our constitutional and legal framework, ” he said.
” Politically parties’ candidates have submitted names of associates to run with them and that is the position of the law as of today and nothing has changed.
” For there to be a substitution of the candidate, the Vice presidential candidate must write to INEC, with an affidavit stating that he is withdrawing from the race within the time frame provided by the law. That’ s the only way there can be a substitution of candidates. “
