I Now Eat Dry Rice, Ousted Niger President Laments Hardship

Ousted President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum, says he is being kept isolated and forced to eat dry rice.

Recall that on July 26, 2023, the military ousted Bazoum and suspended the constitution.

President Bola Tinubu, the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), had planned a meeting for Thursday after the regional bloc’s seven-day deadline for the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum expired.

In a series of text messages to a friend, Bazoum stated that he had been “deprived of all human contact” since Friday, with no one supplying him with food or medicine.

According to the deposed president, he had been without electricity for a week, which was a common occurrence for all Nigeriens after Nigeria shut off power in response to the coup.

Bazoum claims that all of the perishable food he was given has since gone bad, and he is now living on dry spaghetti and rice.

Bazoum has maintained communication with the outside world despite his solitude.

Despite being denied the opportunity to talk with acting US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland on her visit to Niamey, Nigerien capital, on Monday, Bazoum spoke over the phone with Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The 14th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, met with the coup leaders to open a window for discussion, according to the Daily Trust.

According to sources, Sanusi travelled in his personal capacity but briefed President Bola Tinubu before of the trip.

ECOWAS will meet again in Abuja on Thursday to discuss the coup. According to Daily trust.
