UK Police charges former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, with bribery

Former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been formally charged with bribery-related offenses by the British police. Vanguard reported this development on August 22, 2023. The UK authorities suspect that Diezani received bribes in exchange for awarding lucrative oil and gas contracts, as stated by Reuters.

The Head of the National Crime Agency’s International Corruption Unit, Andy Kelly, indicated that there is suspicion that Diezani exploited her authority in Nigeria to secure financial rewards connected to the allocation of multi-million-pound contracts. The charges against her resulted from an international investigation conducted by the NCA.

The allegations involve Diezani benefiting from perks such as over £100,000 in cash, private jet flights, extravagant family vacations, and the use of multiple London properties.

Diezani served as a minister during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, spanning from 2010 to 2015. In addition to her ministerial role, she held the position of President of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
