An open confrontation between Niger and France could prevent intervention of ECOWAS- Abiodun Adeniyi

Renowned political analyst, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi, has expressed concerns about the ongoing tensions between the French Government and the military junta in Niger. In an interview on ARISE TV’s ‘Prime Time’ program, Professor Adeniyi warned that the faceoff could potentially undermine the peaceful efforts being made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore constitutional order in Niger.

Professor Adeniyi emphasized that an open confrontation between France and Niger could have disastrous consequences for both countries and the region as a whole. He pointed out that while France possesses more firepower than Niger, a direct confrontation could escalate the situation and make it difficult for ECOWAS to mediate and find a peaceful solution.

He further cautioned that France’s eagerness to resolve the crisis swiftly could inadvertently hinder ECOWAS’ efforts to engage in peaceful dialogue and reach a resolution. He stressed the importance of preventing the situation from escalating into a full-blown conflict and undermining the regional organization’s diplomatic efforts. Professor Abiodun Adeniyi’s remarks highlight the delicate balance between addressing the crisis in Niger and avoiding actions that could worsen the situation or hinder diplomatic solutions proposed by ECOWAS.

In his words; “for the issue of France and Niger, that’s another area we need to be very careful, because it seems to be snowballing and we hope that it does not degenerate further. Let’s not forget that France is a stronger power than Niger. Let it not turn into an open confrontation because it can be very disastrous, and it will eventually prevent the intervention of ECOWAS. Because ECOWAS now toeing the line of peace and dialogue, and this can complicate everything.”
