Alleged Drug Trafficking: No Evidence Tinubu Was Convicted In United States – Presidential Tribunal

According to Vanguard, the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC has dismissed the allegation that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was convicted in the United States on a drug trafficking charge.

The tribunal in its judgement in a joint petition by the Labour Party and its candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, held that the $460,000 fine imposed on Tinubu in the US was a civil matter, not a criminal conviction. The court stated that such fine did not translate to a criminal conviction to disqualify Tinubu from the presidential election held on February 25.

The five-member panel led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, held that the case that led to the fine that was awarded against Tinubu, “was in the civil docket” of the court in the US.

The court held that Obi and the Labour Party failed to provide evidence that Tinubu was convicted for any criminal offence in the USA, saying that following a letter the Inspector General of Police wrote in 2003, the American Embassy, confirmed that there was no criminal record against President Tinubu.
