Ali Muhammad, the former Deputy Director of Media and Publicity for the APC presidential campaign council, has responded to the European Union Election Monitoring Group’s report on the flaws in the 2023 elections. The EU report highlighted numerous irregularities and concluded that the election did not meet the minimum standard of credibility.

In his reaction, Ali Muhammad agreed with the EU’s assessment that there were indeed issues with the 2023 election. However, he argued that it should not be compared to previous elections held since the start of Nigeria’s democratic regime in terms of credibility and fairness. According to him, the 2023 election stands out as the most credible of all.

He clarified that the discrepancies observed during the electoral process were a result of utilizing technology and ICT devices in conducting the election.

Additionally, he urged the EU to not only scrutinize the election procedure but also evaluate the individuals responsible for overseeing the electoral process. However, he acknowledged that the election may not have been flawless, but measures will be taken to rectify the observed issues and prevent their recurrence in the future.

According to him: “indeed, the observations made by the EU are valid because there are systemic problems that occurred in the election, but one thing I’ll like to address when I’m given opportunities like this is that we focus on the conduct of the process and the conduct of the election, but what about those who conducted the elections, the politicians, supporters, and other stake holders in the process, even the media and the securities too? So it’s a whole lot of process, but I’m sure that going forward all these observable lapses will be covered.”

However, it is important to note that the EU report raised concerns about the flaws in the electoral process, which included irregularities such as voter intimidation, ballot box stuffing, and manipulation of results. These findings have sparked a debate about the overall integrity of the election and the need for electoral reforms to ensure a more transparent and fair process in the future.

While Ali Muhammad acknowledges the glitches in the 2023 election, his assertion that it is the most credible of all raises questions and invites further scrutiny. It is crucial for stakeholders to critically examine the EU report and engage in constructive dialogue to address the identified flaws and work towards improving the electoral system for the benefit of all Nigerians.
