Aggrieved senators vow to drag Akpabio to court over NASS election, alleged use of barcoded ballots

From what was gathered, according to LEADERSHIP newspaper’s report. Some aggrieved senators who were not comfortable with the process through which the former governor of Benue State, Senator Goodswill Akpabio emerged as the leader of the 10th NASS, had threatened to challenge him in court. The daring senators were believed to come from Sen. Abdul’ Aziz Yari’s camp or those who were believed to have been subjected to threats to favor Akpabio.

Some of the ruling party’s senators alleged that there is some heap of injustices surrounding the process that brought Akpabio, stressing how senators were subjected to a high volume of threats and the use of barcoded ballots papers to compromise the process and, as such, the confidence and transparency in secret balloting were not perfected.

Meanwhile, another senator who did not want his name in print said the majority of the lawmakers who voted for Akpabio did so under compulsion and threats. And if such is not promptly checked, it will inflict heavy injury to the national interest. Therefore, the right thing must be done to avert international embarrassment, the senator opined.

However, in a video that trended over the weekend, Deputy Speaker Orji Uzor Kalu said, “The election in the Senate was very transparent. Senator Akpabio won the election. It was free; it was fair, he has noted. Notwithstanding, about 27 senators have vowed to dump the ruling party should their grievances are not addressed. In their stance, they alleged Akpabio was not lawfully elected, praying his candidacy should be nullified in court.
