INEC Calls Witness, Closes Defence In LP’s Petition

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has closed its defence in the petition filed by the Labour Party after calling one witness at the Presidential Election Petitions Court.

At the resumed hearing of the petition filed by the Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi on Tuesday, the electoral umpire called one Lawrence Bayode, a Director in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of the Commission.

The witness admitted that some of the results were downloaded from INEC’s portal. He also insisted under cross-examination that the results of the February 25 presidential election released by the commission are authentic.

Fire Guts Hotel In Onitsha

Fire has gutted the popular Soprom Hotel in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, destroying property worth millions of naira.

The state’s police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the incident on Monday, said the fire started around 5am and that policemen were immediately deployed to the scene to maintain law and order.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Tuesday, revealed the new principal officers of the 10th House of Representatives.

They include Julius Ihonvbere (APC – Edo, House Majority Leader), Halims Abdullahi (APC – Kogi, Deputy Majority Leader), Bello Kumo (APC – Gombe, Chief Whip), Adewunmi Onanuga (APC – Ogun, Deputy Chief Whip). Abbas also read a letter from the Minority Caucus which detailed the names of the principal officers.

Court nullifies Nnamani’s expulsion from PDP

The former Senator representing Enugu East, Chimaroke Nnamani, has expressed delight over the verdict of a Federal High Court in Abuja, which nullified his expulsion from the Peoples Democratic Party .

In a statement he signed and issued in Abuja, on Monday, Nnamani explained that the court nullified his expulsion describing PDP‘s action as “null and void.”

According to the Senator, Justice J. K . Omotosho in his ruling following a suit he filed after the erstwhile National Chairman of the PDP Dr Iyorchia Ayu-led National Working Committee (NWC ) expelled him for alleged anti party activities, held that the party lacks the power it exercised.

Nnamani said, “The court held that the plaintiff was not given fair hearing besides the fact that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) and not the NWC has has the power to discipline a member of the National Assembly.
