Peter Obi decries GSK’s exit from Nigeria

Mr Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate, Labour Party in the 2023 election, has decried the exit of the Pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), from Nigeria after 51 years of operations.

Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, announced this on Saturday morning in Lagos his official Twitter handle.

According to the Agency of Nigeria (NAN), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a British pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation, announced on Thursday that it planned to leave Nigeria after 51 years of existence.

Its Spokesperson, Omongiade Ehighebolo, stated in a statement that the difficulty in obtaining cash was impacting the organization’s capacity to keep a continuous supply of medications and vaccines on the market.

According to NAN, GSK owns a manufacturing facility in Agbara on more than 25 hectares of land.

The company directly employed 400 highly technical specialists, including chemists, microbiologists, biochemists, chemists, dentists and doctors, to name a few. It also employed over 1000 other employees. According to The Nation.

Obi stated that the company, which has indirectly created jobs and business prospects for thousands of Nigerians across the country, regretted leaving all of this behind and putting more people back into unemployment.

According to the LP flag bearer, their rationale for departing portends a bleak future for the country’s investment climate.

“Today, I was saddened to learn that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is leaving Nigeria after 51 years of operations,” he remarked.

“Their reason for leaving Nigeria is even more disheartening: they no longer see any future growth of the country based on productivity.”
