8 Foods You Should Never Eat Raw And Toxins Found In Them

With the raw food diet trend awareness going on strong in the world and the amazing benefits of consuming raw foods, we wonder if there’s a need to still cook our foods. Well, there is. The fact remains that not all foods can be consumed raw.

Some foods contain harmful toxins that can be removed by either processing or cooking them. Consumption of this kind of food without cooking might require caution to prevent hazards to health.

The following are 8 foods you should not eat raw;

1. Red Kidney Beans;

Raw, unprocessed or undercooked red kidney beans contain a toxic substance called Phytohaemagglutinin, which can cause severe nausea, vomiting and in some cases, even death.

Red beans also contain lectin which might upset the body system causing food poisoning.

2. Potatoes

Another food you should never eat raw is potatoes. Raw potatoes aren’t suitable for your body as their starchy, mealy texture isn’t palatable and they can cause bloating.

They also contain a toxic substance called Solanine, which can cause headaches, vomiting, irritations etc.

3. Tomatoes

Now this feels weird right? I can hear you scream tomatoes??? Well, eating tomatoes raw might not be a healthy option for you.

Tomatoes contain a substance called Lycopene in abundance, but the digestive tract can only process a very little amount of this antioxidant.

4. Honey;

Eating raw honey is not advisable as it contains spores of bacteria Clostridium botulinum, which is harmful to babies or children under the age of one.

It may cause botulism poisoning which may result in life-threatening paralysis. Even though is very rare in healthy adults and older children, it should still be avoided as much as possible.

5. Eggs

Eggs are loaded with nutritious substances which makes them an important part of our diets. However uncooked or lightly eggs contain a germ called Salmonella, which can cause hazards to your health

6. Cashew Nuts;

Eating large quantities of cashew nuts can result in kidney damage and other chronic health problems because of the high level of oxalate contained in them

Raw cashew nuts also contain a very toxic substance called urushiol, which is also found in poison ivy

7. Milk;

Raw milk should not be consumed as it contains dangerous bacterias like Salmonella, E. Coli, Listeria, Campylobacter etc which can result in food poisoning.

8. Cassava

Cassava contains a toxin called cyanide which is harmful to the body even in small quantities. So this food should be processed properly before consumption
