Tribunal: Reactions Trail Report Of Atiku, Obi And Kwankwaso Planning To Merge To Wrest Power From APC

A recent report by Arise stated that the presidential candidates of three opposition parties – Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party – are considering a merger ahead of a possible rerun of the 2023 presidential election.

The rationale behind the proposed alliance is to unite the opposition against the incumbent, President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress party, who was declared winner of the initial poll. According to inside sources, Obi, Abubakar, and Kwankwaso believe that the election tribunal may nullify the results of the February vote due to allegations of significant irregularities.

The opposition candidates hope that in the event of a rerun, their combined forces under a single banner would be strong enough to unseat Tinubu. However, the judgment on the pending election tribunal case is still awaited, leaving many Nigerians in suspense over the final outcome.

The presidential election petition case opened on May 8th and the parties adopted their final written addresses a few weeks ago. The opposition’s legal team argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission failed to conduct free, fair and credible elections. However, the winner’s party insisted the polls were valid. The tribunal judges are expected to deliver their verdict soon.
