President Tinubu To Sack Buhari’s Last-minute Appointees

The recent appointments made by former President Muhammadu Buhari just before he handed over to the new administration led by Tinubu might be canceled.

Buhari was still approving appointments, even on the morning of May 29, 2023, his final day in office, shortly before Tinubu took over. Sources have revealed that there are plans to replace some of the individuals appointed by the previous government.

A reliable source informed The PUNCH that this move could impact the last-minute appointments made by Buhari’s ministers and agency heads. The source explained, “Some of the last-minute appointments made by former ministers may be invalidated. It will be a gradual process, so I can’t give you the exact number of those affected. As you know, some of these appointments were rushed. They are currently under review, and I can confirm that.”

Last-minute Appointments

On May 11, the former President approved the appointment of Garba Baba-Umar, a retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, as a Senior Security Adviser on International Police Cooperation and Counter-terrorism in the Office of the Minister of Police Affairs. This appointment was aimed at allowing Umar to complete his nationally beneficial tenure as an executive member of INTERPOL.

Just less than a month before the end of the administration, the former Minister of Environment, Muhammed Abdullahi, announced the appointment of a new coordinator for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project on May 2.

A month earlier, on March 24, Buhari, through the Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, appointed a new director for the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu. He also re-appointed Bello Maigari as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Trust Fund and Dr. Gambo Aliyu as the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS on the same day. A new Director-General for the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency was appointed on March 21.

On May 23, the Buhari administration appointed 33 new directors in agencies under the Ministry of Ation and Aerospace Management. On May 25, Garzali Abubakar was appointed as the Executive Secretary of the National Agricultural Development Fund. On May 28, just a day before handing over power, Buhari approved Sha’aban Sharada as the executive secretary of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education.

Already, some of Buhari’s last-minute appointees and long-serving appointees have been removed by Tinubu. For example, in June, Tinubu dissolved the boards of all federal government agencies, including some whose members had been recently approved by the Buhari administration.

On Friday, Tinubu replaced Dr. Bashir Gwandu, who was appointed by the Buhari administration as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure on May 19, 2023, with Khalil Halilu.
