2023 Election: Tribunal Sacks Lagos Labour Party Rep Seyi Sowunmi, Declares APC's Ogunremi Winner

The National Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal in Lagos has overturned the return of the Labour Party’s (LP) nominee, Seyi Sowunmi, as the House of Representatives member for Ojo Federal Constituency in Lagos State, Channels reports. Instead, a three-member tribunal led by Justice Abdullahi Ozegya declared Lanre Ogunyemi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the duly elected candidate of the election held on February 25, 2023.

The panel also includes Justices Ashu Ewah and Muhammad Sambo. Ogunremi, a two-term state lawmaker and former secretary of the APC in Lagos, had contested Sowunmi’s declaration as the election’s winner on the grounds that the respondent was not properly sponsored and qualified to run for office as the Labour Party’s candidate for the Ojo Federal Constituency.

In its ruling on the petition, the tribunal agreed with the petitioner that the Labour Party candidate lacked the qualifications necessary to run for office. Therefore, it ruled that his votes were wasted and that the APC’s Ogunyemi, the second-place finisher, should have been proclaimed the winner of the Ojo Federal Constituency.
