2023: "As a fair minded person, I know that no Election is perfect but this one was a Sham." – Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized the outcome of the 2023 presidential election in which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged victorious. Momodu expressed his views during an interview with Channels TV, where he voiced his concerns regarding the conduct of the election.

Dele Momodu asserted that had the election been conducted in a fair and transparent manner, he would have been quick to advise his party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to extend his congratulations to Tinubu as the legitimate winner. When pressed for details about what specifically troubled him regarding the election announcement and procedures, he alluded to overarching concerns encompassing both aspects.

Furthermore, Dele Momodu elaborated on his misgivings, underscoring the fundamental flaws he perceived in the election process itself. He refrained from delving into specific issues, citing ongoing legal proceedings and his non-judicial role. While acknowledging that Nigeria often faces criticism from the international community and other quarters, he maintained his belief that the 2023 election was deeply flawed and far from ideal. He drew a notable contrast with his response to the 2019 election, where he promptly urged Atiku Abubakar to congratulate the winner, President Buhari, demonstrating his commitment to fairness and the acceptance of election outcomes when they are conducted properly. Nevertheless, he characterized the 2023 election as a “sham” and “utterly chaotic.”

In his own words, Dele Momodu emphasized, “Everyone, including the international community, is entitled to their opinions, even if they choose to criticize us. It’s part of our tradition, and we don’t always readily accept the truth. However, the undeniable fact is that if Tinubu had won without the numerous irregularities, I would have been the first to advise my candidate to congratulate him. In 2019, when they declared Buhari the winner against Atiku, I took to Twitter immediately to encourage Atiku to extend his congratulations. I’m a fair-minded individual, and I understand that no election can be flawless, but this one was a glaring disappointment, a complete debacle.”
