ECOWAS communique is contradictory, opting for dialogue and setting up a standby force- Shehu Sani

According to a news that was published by the Punch paper online this evening, it was reported that the West African heads of state, today said that all options, including the use of force remained on the table, in order to restore constitutional order in Niger Republic after the July 26th coup, as the community ordered the activation of its standby force.

It was reported that the remarks came as the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), met in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja on Thursday, for an emergency summit to discuss a responses to last month’s military takeover in Niger Republic, after the coup leaders defied their earlier threat to use force to restore democracy.

However, while Senator Shehu Sani, who happens to be the former senator representing the Kaduna Central Senatorial District, was reacting to this on his official Twitter handle this evening, he said that the communique by ECOWAS was contradictory because, they opted for dialogue and still decided to set up a ‘standby’ force against Niger Republic.

Shehu Sani further reacting to this development said that, the ECOWAS leaders should not drag the continent into war because of the coup that was carried out in Niger Republic.

ECOWAS communique is contradictory;Opting for dialogue and setting up a standby force. Our message to the leaders of West Africa is unambiguously clear;DO NOT drag us to war because of coup in Niger Republic.
